Prince William Sound

Prince William Sound

Prince William Sound is an area of immense beauty located on the most northern edge of the Gulf of Alaska. It’s 2,700 miles of coastline extends from Cordova and Valdez on the far east side, almost to Seward on the West with the city of Whittier in the center. It is bordered by 4.4 million acres of National Forest and three of North America’s major ice fields. This is where you can understand the meaning of the word "Fjord" as Prince William Sound is made up of many deep fjords with tidewater glaciers that calve before your eyes, and islands around every turn with untold numbers of sea birds.

Depending on the length of time and time of year that you visit the Prince William Sound you can see whale, seals, sea otters, porpoise, eagles, and seabirds, (there are over 200 species). For the fisherman there are halibut, red snapper, sea bass, shrimp and five species of salmon that can be caught the last of June through September. With a short hike trout can be found in the lakes. Flowers! Berries! Hikes will open your eyes to a new experience in plant life. With numerous coves, bays, and glaciers Sea Kayaking has become a very popular sport. For the hunter or camera adventurer there are bear, both black and brown, and Sitka blacktail deer. This is a big place, about the size of the State of Virginia. It will take many times to experience it all.
